Clean Streets Program

With three decades of service in the New York City Department of Sanitation, including as Borough Chief of Manhattan and Queens, Al Rahner brings extraordinary experience and leadership to the Chinatown Clean Streets program. Known as a dynamic problem-solver and goal-oriented leader, Al has a track record of managing all aspects of large-scale efforts. Among his accomplishments, Al supervised 500 employees in clean-up efforts at the World Trade Center following 9/11. When the 2000 Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration was threatened by 15 inches of snow, Al led a massive, two-day effort to clear the streets. He was recognized by the Queens Borough President for the efficient mobilization of clean-up crews during the installation of the “Red Bird” subway car outside Queens Borough Hall.

As Borough Chief of Queens West,  Al was responsible for directing operations for 856 uniformed and civilian personnel in eight facilities; as Borough Chief of Manhattan, Al oversaw 1,340 uniformed and civilian personnel in 12 facilities. Areas of responsibility included export/disposal of collection & recycling, street cleaning, special events, enforcement of health code laws, safety, snow removal, personnel management and community services.
